Therapy

I am passionate about collaborating with you to find peace during whatever difficult life circumstance you encounter.  My goal is to provide you with a unique therapy experience that allows you to exceed your therapy goals and discover the heart of the issue to create lasting change in your life.  Additional areas of emphasis include couples work, women's issues, and pet loss.

PRE-ENGAGED & DATING THERAPY

Are you interested in learning how to better understand and appreciate the differences between you and your partner?  Would you like to improve your communication skills?  Have you ever wondered what your personal, couple, or family goals would be if you decided to get married?  I offer therapy to pre-engaged/dating couples who would like to enhance their relationships.  Our time together is customized to your relational goals and my training as a PREPARE/ENRICH Facilitator provides you with an additional option to utilize assessments and relationship exercises to better meet your unique needs.

PREMARITAL THERAPY

Would it be helpful to explore how you can better prepare for issues such as shared finances and budgeting?  Are you interested in learning more about your family of origin and how that will impact your marriage?  Would you like to gain a more thorough understanding of your strengths and growth areas as you enter marriage?  It has been estimated that "the average wedding costs $27, 800 and up" (The Knot, 2010).  Pre-marital therapy is a cost effective way to invest beyond your wedding day by investing in your relationship.  As a PREPARE/ENRICH Facilitator I offer couples an optional program that has been "utilized by over 3 million couples" since 1980 (Prepare/Enrich, 2010).  I would be honored to assist you with preparing for your future, congratulations on your upcoming wedding!

MARITAL THERAPY

Do you feel like you have hot topics that you and your partner can't discuss without a fight?  Do you ever feel like you and your partner don't seem to be on the same page anymore?  Would you like to enhance the intimacy in your marriage?  I serve marital couples in accomplishing a variety of relationship goals tailored to what you hope to accomplish.  I also offer an optional PREPARE/ENRICH "Couples Checkup" which assesses your areas of strengths and growth.  I hope to provide both you and your partner a safe environment to foster a deeper connection in your relationship.

WOMEN'S ISSUES

Do you seem to be constantly comparing yourself to others?  Are you feeling overwhelmed with trying to find balance in your life?  Does it seem like you're always emotionally drained and stressed?  Do you feel like you have lost your identity?  I have had the pleasure of working with amazing women on creating more balance in their life, learning to love themselves, managing life stressors with more ease, and more.  I would love to take this journey of self discovery with you.

PET ISSUES & PET GRIEF THERAPY

Based on my experience working with animals at vet clinics and animal shelters and being a pet owner myself, I have a tremendous amount of compassion for both animals and their owners.  I believe that individuals who face issues regarding the health and behavior of their pet can be significantly impacted.  My hope is that I create a therapy environment where your struggles and grief regarding your pet are not minimized, but instead you are given a respectful environment that fosters personal growth and healing.  The reality of pet loss in particular can be significant and "research has shown that the human grieving process following a pet's death is similar to that experienced by people who have lost a family member or close friend" (American Veterinary Medical Association, 2010).  In addition, it has been noted that "more than 80 percent of pet owners in America consider their pets to be members of their families" (Michigan State University, 2010).  I would be honored to provide therapy services to you if you are struggling with pet issues or pet grief.  If you are needing assistance with your pet's health or behavior, I would be able to provide a referral to someone who could assist you in your pet's needs.

EMDR THERAPY

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is an integrative psychotherapy approach that helps people to heal from the symptoms and emotional distress that are the result of disturbing life experiences.  Repeated studies show that by using EMDR people can experience the benefits of psychotherapy that once took years of traditional “talk therapy” to make a difference.  When a person is very upset, their brain cannot process information as it does ordinarily.  One moment becomes “frozen in time,” and remembering a trauma may feel as bad as going through it the first time because the images, sounds, smells, and feelings haven’t changed.  These memories can have a lasting negative effect that infers with the way a person sees the world and the way they relate to other people.  EMDR seems to have a direct effect on the way that the brain processes information.  Normal information processing is resumed, so following a successful EMDR session you still remember what happened, but it is less upsetting.  To date, EMDR therapy has helped millions of people of all ages relieve many types of psychological stress.

What kind of problems can EMDR treat?
The studies to date show a high degree of effectiveness with the following conditions:

Grief/Loss
Depression
Anxiety-panic attacks, phobias, fears
Performance anxiety
Childhood trauma
Low self-esteem
Eating disorders
Traumatic Events-accidents, natural disasters, etc.
Post traumatic stress
Injury/Pain disorders/Chronic illness
Relationship problems
Worry
Trouble sleeping
Physical/Sexual/Emotional abuse
Stress reduction
